Big Basin State Park

If you’ve seen one redwood, you’ve seen them all. - Ronald Reagan

After all the recent rain I was ready to get out on the first nice weekend. Unfortunately the weather didn’t fully cooperate, it turned out to be overcast, but at least it didn’t rain. Rion and Diane suggested I head to Big Basin State Park. They had hiked there in the past they liked the terrain and views. I had intended to hike to a waterfall and camp nearby, but the campground was full. My second choice was a campground called Lane about 6 miles from HQ. It was a beautiful hike with groves of giant redwoods and ferns. The trail on the way to Lane went past the site of an old shingle factory. There were still some old bits a pieces laying around, like an old steam boiler. The campground was okay. There were ~6 sites that were spaced 50-70 yards apart. Three other groups showed up that night, but everyone stayed pretty quiet and low key. I turned in pretty early since the breeze started getting cool and I didn’t bring warm clothing. My cozy sleeping bag felt great. I woke up the next morning and hiked out via a little longer route. I was a little sore, but the hike out went pretty quick and smooth.
