These are pictures (taken by Mona) of a trip we took over the 4th of July weekend. Our primary destinations were Mono Lake and Bodie.

Mono Lake has no outlet and as a result, is high in salinity and alkalinity. Fresh water springs introduce calcium carbonate into the lake, which is already nearly saturated. The added calcium carbonate precipitates out and forms the structures you see in the photos called Tufas.

Bodie is an 1800’s mining ghost town. It’s now a state park and maintained and protected by the state. It was interesting, but it would have been better if we had more history information.
